19-year-old sensation, Martin Garrix, has plotted his course for Colorado this weekend to attend the most happening party in the universe. Scheduled to perform on the opening night of Skylab 2015, Garrix is sure to play a truly stellar set along with an impressive lineup of Electronic Dance Music artists. Garrix will be touching down just northwest of Denver at the 1st Bank Center. You can catch the boy wonder blasting his killer EDM tracks at the music festival this Friday, September 18th.
Martin Garrix may be younger than the Skylab musical festival itself — which first started back in 1994 — but his music has already landed him at the top of the charts. At age 17, his debut single, “Animals,” earned him some of the most coveted DJ recognitions and awards in the world. Garrix held the #1 spot on Beatport; is the youngest person in history to be voted on in the Top 100 DJs Poll; reached #21 on the United States’ Billboard Hot 100; and reached #1 on top music charts in Belgium, Scotland and the United Kingdom.
Born in the Netherlands as Martijn Garritsen, the Dutch DJ and producer started his career a couple years prior to releasing the hit, “Animals.” Having grown up in the Netherlands, Garrix was surrounded by the EDM scene, and expressed interest in becoming a DJ at a very young age. In an interview with DJ Mag, Garrix recalls his first encounter with EDM:
“It was 2004, I was watching the Olympics with my mother and Tiësto was playing there. That was the first time I got in touch with electronic music, the first time I actually saw a DJ.”
Martin eventually attended and completed production school at the Herman Brood Academy in Utrecht, NL. He won the SLAM! FM DJ Talent of the Year Award in 2012 after co-releasing the track “BFAM” with Julian Jordan. He also ghost-produces a ton of EDM tracks for other artists in the industry which caught the attention of Spinnin’ Records in 2012:
“Then I made a ghost production for somebody else — I can’t tell you which track I made — but this track got signed to Spinnin’ Records and became really big. They found out that I made it, and so they invited me to their office and I played them my other stuff — and we signed.”
Garrix is the architect behind many of the scene’s most modern and iconic tracks. He has collaborated with a variety of top artists, including Hardwell, Sander Van Doorn, Dimitri Vegas, Like Mike, Dillon Francis, Afrojack, Avicii, Usher and his own personal mentor and idol — Tiësto. While the young prodigy remained signed with Spinnin’ Records for a few years, in August of this year he announced on Facebook that will no longer be working with the label.
This is Martin’s first visit to the state of Colorado so you can expect to witness one unforgettable show at Skylab 2015. Also new this year, other than the venue change, is that the producer has been hinting about launching real satellites into space during the music festival (see images).
