Just fifteen miles west of downtown Denver, the Red Rocks Amphitheater is tucked away in the picturesque foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Several tilted disc-shaped rocks create a natural open-aired stadium for thousands of jubilant party people. The vertical natural outcrops are dubbed ‘Creation Rock’ to the north and ‘Ship Rock’ to the south. These colossal sandstone monoliths date back to the Jurassic period and produce pitch perfect acoustics and a totally unique musical experience. Construction of the amphitheater was started in 1936 and completed in 1941 by Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s sponsored Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). Red Rocks is truly like no other venue on Earth – it turns every concert into a vortex of musical positivity and optimism. Each year – thousands of ecstatic people collectively pulse to rhythm of the universal beat. Global Dance Festival is Red Rock’s main festival event of the year and the crown jewel for summertime Denver concerts – a truly historic occasion that showcases the EDM industry’s elite. This is the party of the summer!

Ha Hau and Kostas Kouremenos from the esteemed Triad Dragons Entertainment collective, a locally based music production and promotion company, flawlessly curate this memorable Denver event. In 2003, Global Dance Festival’s first year, the crowd was a modest three thousand people. Initially the event was held in non-permit warehouse spaces around Denver. It started off as an alternative subterranean culture focused mainly on DJs and pure electronic music. However, in the mid to late ‘90s, the scene rapidly picked up steam, expanded in popularity and started to crossover into the mainstream. Eventually, Hau and Kouremenos moved the event to Red Rocks and dubbed it – Rave on the Rocks. Over time, due to Colorado’s anti-rave laws, the celebration’s namesake evolved into the Global Dance Festival.

Empire of the Sun performing at Global Dance Festival 2011 Let’s quickly flashback to 2011 – an important year in the development of electronic dance music. Skrillex dropped his critically acclaimed Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites EP, which reached number three on the U.S. Billboard Dance/Electronic album charts. Additionally, Nero’s single Promises topped the U.K. singles charts at number one. The sub-genre of EDM was quickly growing and gaining traction in the public’s eye. That year, Global booked Skrillex and exposed the EDM community to the newly emerging genre of dubstep. They also added a third night featuring genre crossovers such as Empire of the Sun, Big Gigantic and hip-hopper Kid Cudi. The party swelled to over 17,000 music lovers and EDM enthusiasts. GDF 2011 was a historic bill that included a diversified lineup of Benny Benassi, LMFAO, Major Lazer, Porter Robinson and many others.

Each year, Global Dance Festival is an education for electronic dance music fans, which exposes up-and-coming artists and highlights cutting edge trends in the culture. The Triad Dragons emphasize booking both veteran heavy hitters and emerging acts in the industry. Global has undeniably put Denver on the map as a leading city in the electronic dance music movement. People flock from far and wide to experience this one-of-a-kind Rocky Mountain event.
