In 1993, The Smashing Pumpkins broke into the musical mainstream with the release of their four-time platinum second album Siamese Dream. Their next project nine-time platinum Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (1995) debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 album chart and sold over twenty million copies in the United States alone. The Pumpkins were one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed alternative rock bands of the ‘90s. In 2009, front man Billy Corgan conceptualized an ongoing work in progress known as Teargarden by Kaleidyscope – a forty-four track project loosely inspired by the Tarot. This ambitious musical work includes the separate releases of Oceania (2012), Monuments to an Elegy (2014) and upcoming Day for Night. The Smashing Pumpkins many hits helped define the sound of the alternative music era.
Marilyn Manson, born Brian Hugh Warner in Canton, Ohio, emerged in the mid ’90s as the poster-boy of controversial industrial heavy metal and gothic shock rock. Parents and politicians alike shunned his divisive albums Antichrist Superstar (1996) and Mechanical Animals (1998). His latest record The Pale Emperor is his first release since 2008. It was both critically and commercially successful upon its release reaching number eight on the Billboard 200. The Pale Emperor has a sparse blues influenced sound combined with the familiar elements of hard rock from Manson’s previous works. Manson continues to build a memorable body of work that either entices or alienates music fans.
