Jurassic 5, the widely respected West Coast hip-hop ensemble, returns to Denver on July 17th and 18th. They rock the Ogden Theater on both Friday and Saturday at 9:00PM – as part of a seven-city American tour before they takeoff for multiple European dates. This is a special Denver event for hip-hop heads and music lovers alike. It has been fifteen years since J5 dropped their timeless West Coast classic Quality Control, which peaked at #43 on the Billboard 200. Both this LP and their self-titled EP from 1998 solidified J5 as undisputable movers-and-shakers in early ‘90s hip-hop scene. A decade and a half later, and Jurassic 5 still sounds as crispy as ever. Don’t snooze! Snatch up tickets while you still can, as this Denver concert is expected to sell out quickly.
Quality Control catapulted J5 from relatively unknown L.A. rappers into common fixtures in many hip-hop heads’ CD binders.Quality Control is a headphone masterpiece with funky production from the record archivists Cut Chemist and Nu-Mark. The four emcees, Zaakir, Charli 2na (baritone for days), Akil and Marc 7even, lace the tracks with vocal harmonization (‘take four emcees and make them sound like one’) and standout solo flows. Their music harkens back to the De La Soul 3 Feet High and Rising ’89 era – with Jurassic’s funky party-rock beats coupled hand-in-hand with nonstop witty rhymes. Their standout hits are many and include: ‘Concrete Schoolyard’, ‘Jayou’, ‘Quality Control’ and ‘Jurass Finish First’.
Earlier this year, the crew toured in Australia, New Zealand and Japan. This Denver event is a rare opportunity to experience firsthand one of the influential hip-hop squads of the late ‘90s and early ‘00s! Tickets are $35.00 in advance and $40.00 at the door.
